Women's wellness promoted

Women in the area who want to know more about their health issues have the opportunity to increase their understanding on April 29.

The Northumberland Women’s Health Matters Network (NWHMN), is organizing the Spring Fling Women’s Health Fair to be held from 1-4 p.m. at King Edward Park Community Centre in Brighton.

Kimberley Leadbeater is a member of NWHMN. "The Spring Fling Women’s Health Fairs will highlight a variety of health issues of interest to local women of all ages, packaged in a fun, informative and interactive format. Women can fling into spring at any of these events to meet female colleagues and learn about health topics and related resources that matter to them,” she says.

According to Ms. Leadbeater, women will be able to view various displays and take home resources from local agencies that provide services to women. Attendees can learn more about health topics, including nutrition, physical activity, body image, cancer care, heart health, breast screening, diabetes and much more.

Door prizes, snacks and healthy food samples will also be offered. A special ‘I My Genes’ Fashion Show is set for each health fair, hosted by the Northumberland Body Image Coalition.

According to Ms. Leadbeater, the fashion show will stress the importance of positive self-image for women by featuring volunteers who will model jeans and tell the audience about why they feel comfortable with their “genes.”

The Northumberland Women’s Health Matters Network is a coalition of local health and social service providers. Formed in 2005, the network’s goal is to plan and implement activities that improve the health and wellness of women in Northumberland County.“Organizing these health fairs fits in perfectly with what the network wants to promote to women in our area,” adds Leadbeater.

The fair is one of three being held in Northumberland. The other two are in Alderville and Port Hope.
