Retired microbiologist Kris Rahn has been asking our local politicians and provincial Ministry of the Environment scientists for answers to her concerns about the spreading of municipal sewage sludge on farm land.
She wrote this letter to the blog about spreading near Lone Pine Marsh, west of Dundonald:
Municipal sewage sludge is once again being spread by Terratec in a field next to Lone Pine Marsh. To date spreading has occured on four days, April 30, May 4-6.
Tanker trucks carrying 40,000 litres of sludge each, follow the route from the 401 to Cty Rd 21 and then are pumped out on Cowie Rd, near the corner of 21. Trucks take this route approximately every 15 -20 minutes, all day between the hours of 8:30a.m. and 7:30 p.m.
That is a lot of sludge. The main concern is that the marsh will be contaminated.
This field was sludged last fall, and is being sludged again. WHY? Our groundwater supply and environment are being jeopardized by this activity and our roads are being destroyed by these heavy tankers.
What type of crop will be grown in this field and how will it enter the foodchain?
Time will tell.
