Tenders sought for Castleton Library renovations

Cramahe Council has approved the spending of up to $40,000 on renovations to the lower level of the Castleton Town Hall where the library was previously located.

A renovation budget of $40,000 was approved in the 2009 Municipal Budget for
the Castleton Library earleir this year and on April 28 Cramahe Mayor Marc Coombs held a meeting with community members to discuss the renovation project.

The group iddentified a list of work that would allow the library to re-open. These tasks included:

a. Removal of all non-supporting walls (includes removal of
electrical circuits within walls etc)
b. Removal of existing carpet and replacement with new carpet
c. Carpet removal from stairs and installation of new centre rail,
north handrail and centre post at foyer level
d. Replacement or re-hanging of entrance doors at foyer level
e. Replacement of existing lighting fixtures with energy efficient
fixtures and ones that are less harsh to the eye
f. Cosmetic drywall around ductwork in west end of library
g. High Speed cable drops for computer installations and suitable
electrical outlets for same and for library desk area
h. Recommendation that an outside storage trailer be placed onsite
for storage of items to be kept during renovations
i. The walls of the washroom should be painted, with the old
markings taped around and left untouched. Window frame also
needs to be painted
j. Paint the entire space (by volunteers if not within budget)

Council will ask contractors to bid on the work through a tender process.

The approval granted on May 5 by council did not include funding of staff for the library if it re-opens in 2009. Funding of staff for the Castleton Branch was not included in the 2009 budget.
