The South Cramahe Reunion Committee unveiled its history book this week and it's a beauty.
Honouring the Past, Celebrating the Present, Looking to the Future is a must-read for anyone interested in rural school life in Cramahe in the past 50 years and more.
In compiling the information and pictures the committee went back well past the school's opening in 1961 to the lives of those who attended the one-room schools of yesteryear.
The 232 pages are packed with pictures, stories and comments on school life and those who influenced it. They include the events, both local and worldwide, of the times.
The book opens to a page with 10-year-old Ron Waite and the crest he designed for the school in a contest organised by the first principal, Robert Millar.
The dedication honours those who embraced the future and left their one-room schools to create South Cramahe.
The book is laced throughout with thoughtful, and sometimes humourous comments of former students and staff of South Cramahe, including comments from some of the students of the one-room schools which preceded it.
The book has been carefully planned , well researched, and is deeply expressive, reflecting the sentiments of the former students who collected to create the book and organise the school's reunion on June 5-7, 2009.
The book is a fascinating read. It's not cheap at $65 but production of a quality hard cover book of this size is expensive. And it is a keepsake.
The book will one day be looked upon as a community landmark and a valued commnity resource - a detailed look at Cramahe's storied past and its connection to the events of the day.
