Heritage display on the move

Cramahe and Colborne heritage items will soon be stored together in the former Castleton Town Hall.

Resident and curator of the Colborne display, Roseanne Quinn, approached Cramahe Township Council on Oct. 6 with her proposal to move the Colborne materials north.

Ms. Quinn says the current room in the former Registry Office in Colborne is not appropriate. Three of the walls are too hard to for her to fasten exhibits. The south wall is dominated by large windows. Light through the windows fades colours and damages fabric. There is no room for more storage cases, leaving her with the undesirable situation of storing some items at home.

If the Colborne artifacts are moved, the Colborne Art Gallery artists will have more room. They will be able to market the entire building as a gallery.

The Castleton Town Hall will be ideal for display and storage of the heritage collection. Heritage Cramahe Chair, Lenna Broatch felt the move was a "perfect fit" and appropriate for the amalgamated township.

Council agreed that she had a good idea and supported the move.

Mayor Marc Coombs felt the heritage collection would be well supported but COuncillor Pat Westrope worried about the room being open only for the 12 hours that the library is open.

When Mrs. Broatch suggested an increase in opening hours, Councillor Westrope reminded her it would cost money, unless the heritage room was staffed by volunteers.

Ms. Quinn has volunteered to open the room for appointments to research historic information.

The library in Castleton historically has been open about the same number of hours as the gallery in Colborne.

The collection will be moved when the town hall is available.
