Regarding the robins. A pair built a nest in my neighbour's blue spruce and very soon after the eggs appeared, they were gone along with the birds. A pair came later into my yard and made a nest. These hatched their eggs, but very soon after stopped feeding and the young perished. I did see the male return about a week later, but he left after sitting on the edge of the nest for a few seconds. Very strange behaviour. We do have lots and lots of cats (maybe as many as 30) on our corner, so maybe.........
